West Ham United women’s team midfielder Oona Siren praised the motivation of her side for coming through a tough period of results to record our first Barclays Women’s Super League victory of the season against Everton on Sunday.
In our third successive fixture at Chigwell Construction Stadium, after drawing to Leicester City and dispatching Southampton, the Hammers were firing on all cylinders again in a 3-1 success. First-half goals from Anouk Denton and Amber Tyisak put us in the ascendency at half-time, while Shekiera Martinez notched her sixth of the season in all competitions shortly after.
Although Katja Snoeijs pulled one back for the Toffees with two minutes of normal time remaining, the consolation goal failed to dampen the spirits of Rehanne Skinner’s side and the Claret and Blue Army at full-time.
Siren played all of the contest in east London, completing her fifth WSL 90 minutes of the season, having started every league match for the Irons in 2025/26.
Alongside skipper Katrina Gorry, the Finland international marshalled the midfield, making six recoveries, winning three tackles and four of her ground duels.
“I’m really happy [with the first WSL win of the season],” said our No4. “It’s a really great feeling. I feel like it’s been coming, but it feels really good to finally get the result.
“I feel like we absolutely deserved it (the win). Everyone worked really hard throughout the whole game. It was really important to score early. It gave us confidence. All the goals were really important.
“I feel like, especially in the last few weeks, after we didn’t get the results we wanted, everyone has been really motivated. You can see it in training too.”
Siren and Gorry have started every league game together, building on the partnership they formed last season, and the 24-year-old is loving learning from her captain.
“I really enjoy playing with her (Gorry),” said Siren. “She’s a big role model for me and I try to be as good as her.
“I feel that last season we were really strong on our home pitch. I feel like we still have that extra confidence here even though we have lost some points here. But this is still our place, and we’re still strong here.”
