Internationals | Belloumou and Algeria suffer penalty heartbreak at Africa Cup of Nations

Despite holding Ghana to a goalless draw over 120 minutes, Inès Belloumou and Algeria bowed out of this year’s Women's Africa Cup of Nations in the quarter-finals after an agonising 4-2 defeat on penalties at Stade Municipal de Berkane.

The West Ham United women’s team left-back played all of normal and extra-time in Berkane, Morocco, in what was a cagey last-eight tie. The closest either side came to breaking the deadlock was in the first half, when Stella Nyamekye fired home for Ghana, but her goal was ruled out by VAR for offside.

In the shootout on Saturday, Marine Dafeur stepped up first for Algeria, but her spot-kick was saved by Cynthia Konlan before Josephine Bonsu gave Ghana the upper hand.

After both teams netted their second round of penalties, unfortunately, Belloumou was also denied by Konlan. Ghana went on to convert their next two penalties and subsequently booked a semi-final tie with hosts Morocco.

Belloumou and Algeria exit the tournament having not conceded a goal across their four matches in the competition.
