Michail Antonio

Internationals | Antonio features in Jamaica win

Michail Antonio came off the bench as Jamaica boosted their chances of qualifying from the CONCACAF Gold Cup group stage with a 2-1 victory over Guadeloupe on Friday night.

Following defeat to Guatemala in their tournament opener, the Reggae Boyz needed the points in their quest for a first continental title, and they got them thanks to a first half turnaround.

Guadeloupe - defeated by Panama in their first contest - opened the scoring through former Manchester City forward Thierry Ambrose with 32 minutes on the clock,

However, a quickfire brace from a couple of England-based players - Aston Villa's Leon Bailey and Barnsley's Jonathan Russell - had Steve McClaren's men in front by the break.

Antonio was then introduced for his second appearance since suffering a serious leg injury in a car accident in December with 81 minutes played, and he helped his side see out the victory in San Jose, California.

Jamaica will now face Panama in their Group C finale on Tuesday, needing to match or better Guatemala's result against Guadeloupe to secure their passage to the knockout rounds.

Meanwhile, Finlay Herrick was an unused substitute as England U19s' UEFA European Under-19 Championship campaign came to an end with a 4-2 defeat by the Netherlands.

After draws with Norway and Germany in their first two Group B fixtures, Will Antwi's side needed victory to secure a top two finish, but the Netherlands proved too strong in Bucharest, Romania.
