Edson Álvarez in action for Mexico

Internationals | Álvarez's Mexico suffer Swiss defeat in Gold Cup warm-up

Edson Álvarez made an appearance as a second-half substitute as his Mexico side suffered a 4-2 friendly defeat to Switzerland on Saturday night.

El Tri took on their European opponents in a friendly encounter, as they count down to the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which kicks-off on 14 JUne.

Álvarez replaced Cruz Azul midfielder Érik Lira with 17 minutes left of the clash in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, with Switzerland having just extended their lead to 3-1.

The Swiss opened the scoring in the 20th minute through Breel Embolo, and although Mexico hit back with a 51st minute equaliser from Santiago Giménez, Switzerland soon reestablished their lead thanks to Burnley forward Zeki Amdouni and then added a third through Dan Ndoye.

After Álvarez's introduction, Mexico cut the deficit with a goal from Ángel Sepúlveda, but Switzerland would have the last word as VfB Stuttgart's Fabian Rieder notched a late fourth.

Mexico next face Turkey on Tuesday before their continental championship campaign gets underway on 14 June against Dominican Republic.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Callum Marshall was a late substitute for Northern Ireland as they fell to a 2-1 friendly defeat by Denmark in Copenhagen.

The visitors took an early lead thanks to Pierre-Emile Højbjerg's own goal, but Gustav Isaksen and Christian Eriksen struck to turn the game on its head.

Marshall's late introduction saw the Academy forward earn his tenth senior cap.

Fellow Academy star Gabriel Caliste came off the bench to help Mauritius to a 0-0 draw with Mozambique in the COSAFA Cup - a competition for nations in southern Africa.

Caliste made his bow midway through the second half in Bloemfontein, South Africa, as his country claimed a second goalless draw from two starts in the tournament.

They head into their third group game, against the hosts South Africa, still holding hope of progressing to the semi-finals.

Finally, Dinos Mavropanos was an unused substitute as Greece eased to a 4-1 friendly victory over Slovakia.
