Edson Álvarez started as Mexico secured top spot in CONCACAF Gold Cup Group A with a 0-0 draw against Costa Rica on Sunday night.
Following victories over Dominican Republic and Suriname in their opening two games, El Tri required just a point to keep themselves above their opponents on goal difference - and the stalemate in Las Vegas assured them of that.
It was a dominant display by Mexico, who forced 13 shots to Costa Rica's five while holding 70% possession, and although the goal would not arrive, they got the job done.
Mexico captain Álvarez now has 89 caps for his country and will continue to lead his nation's bid for a record-extending tenth continental title into the knockout stages.
There, Álvarez and his teammates will face Saudi Arabia in the quarter-finals in Glendale, Arizona on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Michail Antonio will be hoping to join his West Ham United teammate in the last eight when Jamaica take on Panama in their final Group C game on Tuesday. The Reggae Boyz need to match Guadeloupe's result to make sure of their top two spot, after winning one and losing one of their first two tournament encounters.
The competition concludes in Houston, Texas, on Sunday 6 July.
