Mexico international Edson Álvarez joined West Ham United from Ajax on a five-year contract for an undisclosed fee in August 2023.

A strong and versatile midfielder, Álvarez won two titles with first club América before crossing the Atlantic Ocean and winning two Eredivisie titles and one Dutch Cup and featuring regularly in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League with the Amsterdam side.

Capped over 70 times by his country, Álvarez won the CONCACAF Gold Cup with his national team in both 2019 and 2023.

Made his West Ham United debut as a second-half substitute in the 3-1 Premier League home win over Chelsea on 20 August 2023...Registered his first Premier League assist for Jarrod Bowen at Aston Villa on 22 October 2023...Scored one goal and assisted a second in the 2-0 UEFA Europa League Group A win over SC Freiburg at London Stadium on 14 December 2023...Scored his first Premier League goal in a 3-1 win at Everton on 2 March 2024...Started both legs of the UEFA Europa League round of 16 win over SC Freiburg in March 2024...Started Mexico's CONCACAF Nations League semi-final win over Panama and final defeat by the United States in March 2024...Started the UEFA Europa League quarter-final second leg home 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen on 18 April 2024...Totaled 42 appearances, 37 of them starts, two goals and two assists in all competitions.

Born in the municipality of of Tlalnepantla de Baz in the northern suburbs of Mexico City, in October 1997...Came through the ranks at Club América and made his Liga MX debut in a win over Santos Laguna at the historic Estadio Azteca in October 2016, a week after his 18th birthday...Debuted for Mexico in a friendly win in Iceland in February 2017...Appeared for Mexico, aged 20, at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia...Scored both goals as Club América defeated Cruz Azul to win the Liga MX Apertura title in December 2018...Still just 21, signed-off his time with Club América by winning the Clausura Copa MX final against Juárez in April 2019, before making his move across the Atlantic Ocean to Ajax that July...Became the first Mexican player to score on his UEFA Champions League group-stage debut when he netted against Lille in September 2019...Went on to win a domestic double with Ajax in 2020/21...Made it consecutive Eredivisie titles the following season, 2021/22...
