Referees confirmed for Olympiacos and Nottingham Forest matches

Matej Jug has been named as the referee for Thursday’s UEFA Europa League Group A match at London Stadium. 

Jug, an experienced Slovenian official, has been a FIFA-listed referee since 2007 and possesses extensive experience of officiating in UEFA’s European competitions. 

The 43-year-old first refereed in a Europa League qualifier in the 2007/08 season, taking charge of Lithuanian side FK Ekranas' 3-1 win away at B36 Tórshavn of the Faroe Islands. and stepped up to Champions League matches in the 2011/12 campaign. 

On a domestic level, Jug has also refereed four Slovenian Football Cup finals, most recently officiating the 2018/19 final where NK Olimpija claimed a 2-1 win over NK Maribor.

He has taken charge of one other UEFA Europa League group stage match so far this season, refereeing AEK Athens’ 1-1 draw with Ajax in Group B in October. 

Jug will be assisted by fellow Slovenians Matej Žunič and Manuel Vidali for West Ham United’s home match with Olympiacos.

Both Žunič and Vidali worked alongside Jug for the draw between AEK Athens and Ajax, and each also possesses their own experience of working across UEFA and FIFA competitions. 

Žunič first ran the line in the Europa League in a 2010/11 qualifier between Icelandic outfit Fylkir Reykjavík and Belarus side Torpedo-BelAZ Zhodino and has since regularly worked in European competitions and across internationals. 

He also was part of the officiating team for the 2012 UEFA Super Cup between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid, which the Spanish side won 4-1 – a game in which Jug was on standby for as an additional assistant referee. 

Meanwhile Vidali has also been a regular across European tournaments since his Europa League debut in the 2014/15 season. He also ran the line across three UEFA Europa League group stage matches last season, including SC Freiburg’s 3-0 win at Olympiacos in September 2022 and Real Betis’ 2-1 away win over AS Roma in October 2022.

Asmir Sagrković will serve as fourth official, having worked in such a capacity for UEFA across the Champions League and Europa League since the 2014/15 season. 

German official Christian Dingert will oversee Video Assistant Referee duties. The 43-year-old has been a full international referee for FIFA since 2013 and regularly officiates in the Bundesliga. He took charge of the 1-1 draw between 1. FC Köln and FC Augsburg at the weekend.

Michael Salisbury has been confirmed as the referee for Sunday’s Premier League match between West Ham United and Nottingham Forest. 

Salisbury has been part of the Select Group of Referees since the 2022/23 season and has officiated four Premier League so far this campaign, most recently taking charge of the 1-1 draw between Brighton & Hove Albion and Fulham at the end of October. 

Sunday’s match will be the first time Salisbury has been the referee for a West Ham match in the Premier League, although he did take charge of the Irons’ defeat at Manchester United in the FA Cup last season. 

Salisbury also served as the Video Assistant Referee for the Hammers’ trip to Brentford last weekend and in West Ham’s first match of the 2023/24 campaign, away at AFC Bournemouth. 

Salisbury will be assisted on Sunday by Richard West and Derek Easton

West has worked as an assistant referee in the Premier League since the 2008/09 season and has run the line at eight Premier League matches so far this campaign. He was also appointed to the 2017 EFL Cup final between Manchester United and Southampton. 

Easton, meanwhile, has been an assistant referee in the Premier League since the 2013/14 campaign, running the line at four league matches including Nottingham Forest’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa last weekend. 

Robert Jones, meanwhile, will undertake fourth official duties. A Premier League referee since 2019, Jones officiated the 2020 EFL League One play-off final between Oxford United and Wycombe Wanderers. 

Video Assistant Referee responsibilities will be overseen by Peter Bankes. Bankes has worked as the referee for two West Ham United Premier League matches this season, away to Bournemouth and at home to Newcastle United.
