David Moyes celebrates at Tottenham

Moyes: We were desperate to win and it's huge for us

David Moyes was thrilled to celebrate West Ham United’s 2-1 Premier League victory at Tottenham Hotspur with the travelling Claret and Blue Army and Hammers everywhere.

The manager and his squad had plenty of reasons to smile and be merry after Jarrod Bowen and James Ward-Prowse scored in the second half against Spurs, cancelling out Cristian Romero’s eleventh-minute header in north London.

Victory extended the visitors’ unbeaten run in all competitions to six matches and Moyes was pleased with the character shown by the Irons in fighting back to secure all three points.

Such a superb result was worthy of celebration and Moyes was pleased to share the moment.

It was a great win.

For the first time this season we’ve been able to celebrate something with our supporters. For them to come away and to see us win was great. We were desperate to win [for them] and getting this win is huge for us.

For all the things Tottenham did, we conceded from a corner kick.

In the main, we’ve been really good from defending from set-pieces. I was really disappointed with that aspect and with how we performed in the first half.

We’re trying to improve and we’re trying to be better on the ball. We’ve got two or three players that are great on the ball like Bowen, Kudus and Paquetá. We didn’t do it so well in the first half.

We were much brighter in the second half.

We were trying to make sure we got a goal back. We got a couple of lucky bounces. Jarrod got the first goal and Prowsey got the second, but we earned them.

James was up to get on the second one. It’s off the post, no one reacts and he’s there to put it in again, and it was even better that it was in front of our own fans.

I watched the Aston Villa – Tottenham game and Villa could hardly get the ball to play.

It was no different for us and we didn’t expect to have much of the ball tonight. We set up to be hard to beat. Sometimes you have to have a bit go your way.

I think, overall, it was a big moment for our supporters.

They want to see us challenging the big teams and we want to do that as well. At the moment, I have to say, Tottenham are as good as any team in the Premier League.

We’ve not had the moments and we want to be that team. We want to have those moments and be winning. We want our supporters to be enjoying it. I think tonight was a big moment for us.

Hopefully it gives our players a lot of confidence, and our supporters as well because we’ve got a really good team here. We’re getting up the league and we’re doing well in Europe, so let’s hope it continues.

I think we’ve had a really good 2023.

Since the World Cup, we’ve had some great moments and we’re in all the tournaments. Our scheduling feels tough but we have to go again. It’s a Thursday – Sunday schedule and we’ll be ready to go again.
