Mavropanos in action for West Ham against Olympiacos

Mavropanos: We’ve shown what we can do

Konstantinos Mavropanos is backing the West Ham United squad to bring their recent cup competition form into this weekend’s Premier League performance.

The Hammers secured a gritty and hard-fought 1-0 win over Olympiacos on Thursday to take control of Group A in the UEFA Europa League, leaving the hosts top of the group with two games left to play.

The victory comes a week after another impressive cup result as the Irons defeated fellow Premier League side Arsenal 3-1 at London Stadium to progress into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Recent efforts in the Premier League have not yielded the same results, but Mavropanos is full of confidence that West Ham can get back to winning ways in league football on Sunday against Nottingham Forest.

We’re working very hard and I think the wins will come for us, particularly after we’ve shown what we can do in this game against Olympiacos.

“We have had a couple of games in the Premier League that we haven’t performed in the way we would want to,” the defender said. “We’ve conceded a few silly goals but we’re working very hard and I think the wins will come for us, particularly after we’ve shown what we can do in this game against Olympiacos.

“Every competition is important and you want to play well in every game. That’s what we’re trying to do here. I think we will bounce back in the league as well.”

Olympiacos’ visit to London Stadium was a closely contested match with few clear-cut chances, making it even more essential that Mavropanos and his defensive teammates remained fully focused throughout the fixture.

The 25-year-old was pleased with his own efforts and the team’s collective drive to claim the three points.

“It’s always nice to play against Greek teams, especially when you come away with the win,” Mavropanos continued. “It was an important win for us in this game and we’re all very happy.

“The whole team worked so hard and I think that’s why we didn’t concede too many chances. We were solid and it was a really good effort from everyone.”

Mavropanos has played the full 90 minutes in each of West Ham’s European matches so far this season and made his first Premier League start for the side away at Brentford last weekend.

The Greece international is relishing his time at the Club so far and hopes to continue to build on his recent showings.

He added: “I’m enjoying my time at West Ham a lot. I am very happy and everyone here is incredible. I want to show why I feel like I will be here for a long time.”
