Making A Racket | The Andy Lapthorne Column

Grand Slam-winning wheelchair tennis player and Season Ticket Holder Andy Lapthorne issues a rallying cry...

Hello everyone, and welcome back to the London Stadium.

We had two games back-to-back in quick succession, with two difficult and tough results to take against Brentford and Leeds United.

Today we welcome Newcastle United for what is sure to be another difficult contest. We are desperate for a result, especially at home, so I’m sure the players have used the last eight days to get in the best shape possible to achieve a home win.

In the last two weeks, I’ve been continuing my preparations for the NEC Wheelchair Singles Masters and UNIQLO Wheelchair Doubles Masters, which are taking place in Huzhou in China in mid-November.

As well as working hard on court, I attended the NFL at Wembley and also the rugby league ‘Ashes’ at Wembley Stadium. I continue to dream that somehow we will see West Ham at Wembley this season.

This season has obviously not gone the way we the supporters or the Club would have wanted. I take hope from positions that we’ve been in in the past. We have managed to turn things around one of my favourite memories of being a West Ham fan was the Carlos Tevez-inspired ‘Great Escape’ in 2006/07, and I’m hoping for something similar this season and the great thing is we have more time this time around.

We have two home games back-to-back before the next international break. It is vital that we are behind the team and try to achieve as many points as possible. I believe the squad of players are capable of achieving two positive results.

I’ll be away for the Burnley game as I’ll be in China, but I will be up late I’m sure watching on my iPad and cheering the lads on.

We need to stick together and fight together, keep believing and never give up as special things can still happen this season.

COYI!
