Manuela Paví’s Colombia were beaten in the Copa América Femenina final on penalties by record-holders Brazil on Saturday night.
An enthralling encounter at Estadio de Liga Deportiva Universitaria in Quito, Ecuador, finished 4-4 after 120 minutes.
In the first half, Linda Caicedo’s opener was cancelled out by Angelina’s penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time.
A Tarciane own-goal restored Colombia’s advantage after the hour mark before substitute Amanda Gutierres levelled proceedings with ten minutes to play.
Just after West Ham United winger Paví was introduced to the pitch, Mayra Ramírez’s composed finish in the 88th minute looked certain to secure Colombia their first-ever Copa América Femenina title. But in the sixth minute of time added on, substitute Marta scored a thunderous goal from outside of the area to take the showpiece to extra-time in the most dramatic circumstances.
The 39-year-old, who came on in the 82nd minute, was soon involved again, prodding Brazil ahead from close range in the 105th minute. However, a stunning free-kick from Leicy Santos meant penalties would decide the winner of the tenth edition of the competition.
Unfortunately for Paví and her side, Brazil clinched the trophy with a 5-4 victory on spot-kicks, claiming their ninth Copa América Femenina in the process.
