Jarrod Bowen in action for England against Australia

International Round-Up: Bowen starts in England win

Jarrod Bowen marked his first career Wembley appearance with a win as England defeated Australia 1-0 in an international friendly on Friday night.

Bowen, back in a Three Lions shirt for the first time in 16 months, played the 90 minutes on the right hand side of a front three, linking up effectively with Chelsea's Conor Gallagher to provide a threat down their flank.

In the first half Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins hit a post after rounding Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan, but made amends on 57 minutes, sliding in to convert Jack Grealish's cross-shot to convert at the back post.

Australia were a threat from set pieces throughout and they struck the woodwork themselves late on when Connor Metcalfe's header struck the upright.

England did enough to take the spoils though and ensure Bowen's fifth cap for his country was a happy one.

Now the Three Lions' attentions turn to a UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy, also at Wembley. on Tuesday.

Dinos Mavropanos in action for Greece against Ireland

Elsewhere on Friday, Dinos Mavropanos and Greece kept themselves on track for qualification for next summer's Euros by winning 2-0 in the Republic of Ireland.

Mavropanos and his fellow defenders stood firm to repel the home side's threat and ensure goals by Atlanta United striker Giorgos Giakoumakis and Olympiacos winger Georgios Masouras took them to the points.

Victory means Greece now have twelve points from six games to sit second in Group B, three points ahead of the Netherlands, who have played a game fewer.

The Dutch were beaten 2-1 by France on Friday, for whom Alphonse Areola was an unused substitute in Amsterdam.

At Under-21 level, Academy goalkeeper Krizstián Hegyi was a starter for Hungary in their 3-1 defeat by Scotland in qualifying for the 2025 UEFA Under-21 Championships.

Hungary were up against it at Motherwell from the off, as Scotland struck twice in the first seven minutes through Kieron Bowie.

Ben Doak's 32nd minute penalty meant Barnabás Kovács' strike eleven minutes later was a mere consolation.
