Eight things you didn't know about Callum Wilson

1. He's from Coventry

Callum Wilson grew up in the town of Coventry in the West Midlands, and his first football memory is of playing on a green in the suburb of Radford. After training with Coventry City in spells as a schoolboy, he joined the Sky Blues at the age of 14. After debuting for Coventry at the age of 17 in 2009, he had spells on loan at fifth-tier clubs Kettering Town and Tamworth before returning to his parent club and breaking through as a first-team regular at the age of 21.

 

2. He's won Player of the Year awards at two clubs

Callum Wilson won the Player of the Year award at both Coventry City and Newcastle United. With the Sky Blues, his 21 goals fired his hometown club to promotion in 2013/14. With the Magpies, he scored 12 Premier League goals in 2020/21.

3. He was prolific for his hometown club

Callum Wilson was voted into the PFA Team of the Year for League One in 2013/14, when he scored 21 goals and registered six assists for Coventry City. Also included in the team was Sheffield United defender Harry Maguire. The pair have since gone on to play seven times together for England.

 

4. He loves scoring on his debut

Callum Wilson scored two goals on his debut for AFC Bournemouth in a 4-0 Championship win at Huddersfield Town on 9 August 2014. He also scored on his debut for Newcastle United in a 2-0 Premier League victory over West Ham United at London Stadium on 12 September 2020. In all, he has scored 12 goals in 16 career appearances against the Hammers, which is four more than he has netted against any other opponent.

5. He made history in an England shirt

Callum Wilson became the first AFC Bournemouth player to play for the senior men’s England national team when he debuted and scored in the Three Lions’ 3-0 friendly international win over the United States at Wembley Stadium on 15 November 2018. Wilson has since appeared in UEFA Euro qualifiers, the UEFA Nations League and was recalled to play twice at the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals in Qatar, where he assisted Jack Grealish’s goal in a 6-2 group-stage win over Iran.

 

6. He's in the top 50 all-time Premier League goalscorers

Callum Wilson’s 88 Premier League goals rank him 44th in the competition’s 32-year history, alongside Didier Drogba and directly ahead of Dennis Bergkamp, Christian Benteke, Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres.

7. He's appeared at the FIFA World Cup finals

Callum Wilson played alongside Declan Rice four times during the latter’s time at West Ham United, between 2019-23. England won all four matches, including 2022 FIFA World Cup group-stage ties against Iran and Wales, and scored 18 goals. Wilson lined up alongside three other current and future Hammers for England, namely James Ward-Prowse, Jesse Lingard and Kalvin Phillips.

 

8. He's a podcaster

Callum Wilson hosted The Footballer's Football Podcast alongside West Ham United's Michail Antonio between 2021-24. The pair recorded over 80 episodes, lifiting the lid on life as a Premier League footballer.
