Cresswell: We’ve got to put it right on the training ground

Aaron Cresswell is sure West Ham United will soon get through the indifferent run which has seen them taste defeat in all three games since the October international break.

The Irons followed the reverses at Aston Villa and Olympiacos with a 1-0 Premier League loss to Everton at London Stadium on Sunday – and Cresswell was just as frustrated as the majority of the 62,469 in attendance in east London as his side missed the opportunity to move back towards the top six of the table.

Instead the Hammers find themselves in the middle of the pack ten games into the new campaign and Cresswell, who played his first Premier League minutes of the campaign on Sunday, knows they quickly need to get back on track.

With a mouthwatering Carabao Cup fourth round tie at home to Arsenal to come in the week, the No3 says the works will begin straight away on the training ground as they search for a change in their fortunes.

“It was tough,” the No3 admitted. “We’ve been in spells like this in many seasons and we’ve just got to stick together and get through it.

“One win changes everything again and we’ve got to stay positive, get back to the training ground, do what we do there and focus on the next game now.

“We’ve had some tough games, Aston Villa away, Olympiacos away, they’re not easy games, and yes, we could have been better today.

“We lacked that cutting edge in the final third, the goal we conceded was sloppy and like I said, we’ve got to get back to the training ground and put it right.”

Cresswell felt there was a lack of sharpness at both ends of the pitch for the Hammers and that hampered their efforts to turn possession into goals on Sunday.

Indeed, the Irons had more than 70 per cent of the ball in the second half, without truly testing Jordan Pickford until Saïd Benrahma’s fierce volley in stoppage time.

For the left-back, sharpening up in those key areas will be the main area of focus before the Gunners head to east London.

“It’s sloppy on our part – there’s no denying they had a couple of chances through our sloppy play, but we’ve got to put that behind us now and move forward,”

“We had control of the game in spells, for the majority of it, but we just couldn’t break them down in the final third. Credit to Everton, they get men behind the ball and make it difficult and we couldn’t get through.

“We had a fantastic start to the season and have done extremely well at times this season. We’ve had a blip now, but we have to stay positive and stick together.”
