Brynjarsdóttir and Houssein in international action

Dagný Brynjarsdóttir was in action for Iceland in a warm-up friendly match ahead of UEFA Women’s Euro 2022.

Stelpurnar okkar took on Poland at the Stadion Dyskobolii Grodzisk Wielkopolski on Wednesday afternoon, with Brynjarsdóttir playing the full 90 minutes in a 3-1 victory.

In a tightly contested first half, it was the home side that struck first. Ewa Pajor slotted the ball home after a swift counter-attack to give Poland the lead.

Iceland rallied in the second period and hit back on 52 minutes when Berglind Björg Porvaldsóttir was found free inside the area – with the forward slotting the ball home from close range.

Further goals from Sveindís Jónsdóttir and Agla Albertsdóttir rounded off the victory for Þorsteinn Halldórsson’s side in a dominant second half display.

Iceland will now head to Germany for a training camp before flying to England for the beginning of the tournament, which they begin against Belgium in Group D on Sunday 10 July.

The 30-year-old midfielder could face off against West Ham United team-mate Hawa Cissoko when they take on France in their third and final group stage game.

Halle Houssein

Elsewhere, Halle Houssein played the full 90 minutes for England U18s as they beat the Republic of Ireland in a friendly match on Thursday afternoon.

The 17-year-old midfielder played in the heart of midfield for the Young Lionesses in the victory at St George’s Park.

In a tightly contested affair, Alex Hennessey’s long-range strike was the difference.

Houssein was influential throughout, dictating the play for her side and showing off her range of passing – whilst also wearing the captains armband for a period in the second half.

Houssein recently joined West Ham United on a permanent basis having impressed during her during her short spell with the Club last season.

England U18s have one more friendly match before players head back to their respective clubs for the beginning of pre-season, with Houssein and her fellow West Ham teammates back in for testing on the 11 July.

The Young Lionesses face Austria at St George’s Park on Sunday 3 July.
