Kurt Zouma hopes to celebrate his birthday with another West Ham United win

Wednesday is a big day for Kurt Zouma and West Ham United.

For not only are the Hammers hosting Manchester City at a sold-out London Stadium in the Carabao Cup but is also the defender’s 27th birthday.

Zouma has impressed since completing a September switch from Chelsea, helping his new team to Premier League victories over Leeds United, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur and a UEFA Europa League Group H win away to Dinamo Zagreb.

The centre-back has shown all the qualities that saw him win two Premier League titles, an EFL Cup, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup with his previous club, forging a formidable partnership with Italian Angelo Ogbonna.

The France international would love to add to his medal collection with West Ham, and he believes David Moyes’ men have what it takes to overcome the holders, take another step closer to Wembley and help him enjoy a happy birthday!

Kurt, Sunday was your first West Ham versus Tottenham match, so what did you make of it?

“I’m very happy. There was a great atmosphere all around the game. It was a great game and we were fighting until the end and we got the win and a clean sheet.

“Derbies are always special, but especially when you win! We’re happy with that. There are many derbies to come, but it was good to get the three points. It was a hard-fought win, but now we move on and we stayed focused on the next game.”

We might not have been at our fluent best, but we still managed to get the win?

“You have to be focused the whole game as you know one mistake can leave you living very dangerously. Obviously, we had a great game. I think everybody was fighting for the ball, we were very, very good defensively and strong, we got the clean sheet and we had some chances to score.

“I’m happy we won and that obviously gives us confidence for the rest of the season.”

Whoever plays, they play with such resilience and heart, and we were playing our third game in eight days and that was our third win and third clean sheet, while Tottenham had changed their entire starting XI for their midweek Europa Conference League match?

“That’s the mentality of the team. Everyone wants to fight for his place and his spot and everyone is doing well at the minute. We’re training very hard and the manager gave us the mentality to never give up and that’s what we do.

“We’re playing the great, we’re having the ball and we don’t concede, so it was a great win with three wins and three clean sheets. We want to continue like that but it’s going to be difficult so we have to stay focused.”

We scored another goal from a set piece on Sunday, and it looked like another one that was planned on the training ground?

“I mean, we know we have got strength from set pieces and a set piece can change the game, like it did on Sunday.

“When you cannot score from open play, set pieces are always there to help. We’re working hard for that and the coaches are working hard for this so we prepare and at the moment it’s working very well, so hopefully they will keep giving us the points.”

Ben Johnson has now completed five matches this season and has not conceded a single goal. What do you make of this young player?

“He’s a great young player, he’s got a lot of quality and he’s going to be here for ages, hopefully. He deserves to be playing week-in, week-out because he’s a good player, but the team around Ben is also playing very well at the minute.

“I didn’t know Ben before I arrived here but, as soon as I saw him, I saw he has quality.”

Finally, we return to action on Wednesday evening at home to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup fourth round, and it’s your birthday, so it’s a big day!

“It’s a big day for the team. Hopefully we can go through and win the game, as that’s the most important thing.”
