Fantasy Premier League – Gameweek 13 preview!

Aaron Cresswell

With the final autumn international break done and dusted, the exciting part of the Fantasy Premier League schedule is nearly upon us!

Nine gameweeks in 36 days across Christmas equals a deadline every four days for FPL managers to navigate, so well-rounded squads will be of utmost importance beyond Gameweek 13.

West Ham United’s 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday might have yielded little by way of Claret and Blue points, but with fixtures aplenty on the horizon, managers have the opportunity to capitalise on the Irons' impressive form so far this season.

Here are all the headlines you need to know ahead of Gameweek 13, in which the Hammers visit Pep Guardiola's Manchester City on Sunday…

Target a set-piece offering?

Bettered only by Liverpool, West Ham have six goals from set-pieces so far this season and have once again demonstrated their status as dead-ball specialists.

Aaron Cresswell (currently valued at £5.5m in the online game), who dominated the taking of set-pieces last season, has shared out the responsibility this campaign, with Jarrod Bowen (£6.4m), Said Benrahma (£6.3m) and Pablo Fornals (£6.0m) chipping in occasionally from corners and free-kicks.

Although set-piece goals are notoriously hard to rely on, West Ham’s defence frequently poses a threat from set-pieces.

Kurt Zouma (£5.4m) topped the scoring charts amongst defenders with five goals last season, whilst Craig Dawson (£4.9m) was fourth on the list with three goals.

Antonio continues to threaten

After his blistering early-season goalscoring returns, Michail Antonio (£8.2m) is still the highest-scoring forward in FPL on 63 points, and continues to pose plenty of threat within matches with solid contributions, as evidenced by the Bonus Points System.

While the No9 did not score in the last three fixtures against Aston Villa, Liverpool and Wolves, between Gameweeks 16 and 22, West Ham play four of the current bottom five in the Premier League table, so there will likely be opportunities to come.

Indeed, of the in-game forwards available, only Josh King (£5.6m), Christian Benteke (£6.3m), Ollie Watkins (£7.3m), Emmanuel Dennis (£5.3m) and Jimenez have scored more than one goal in the past four Gameweeks.

Given his all-round contributions, and the fact that Antonio has already stuffed the FPL stat-sheet this season, the No9 is a strong bet to begin racking up the FPL points from up top once more.

Ben Johnson offering exceptional value

At £4.0m, Ben Johnson is fast becoming a valuable fantasy asset.

Following five successive Premier League starts, Johnson is offering exceptional value as a fifth defender, accumulating 24 FPL points in that time.

Conventionally, FPL managers desire a low-cost final defender to keep on the bench most weeks, so that they can spend more money on premium options elsewhere.

As we’ve seen in past years, such as with Aaron Wan-Bissaka in 2018/19 and John Lundstram in 2019/20, a regularly playing £4.0m defender can be FPL gold dust, and Johnson is one such superb option for FPL managers.

Joao Cancelo

Manchester City: the Gameweek 13 opposition scout report

After three successive clean sheets, there are fewer better FPL defences to invest in than Manchester City's.

Joao Cancelo (£6.6m) is FPL’s joint top-scoring defender with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.8m) after notching back-to-back double-digit hauls - he is arguably City’s best FPL option in the game right now.

However, due to Pep Guardiola’s ruthless rotation in attack, for FPL managers, it is perhaps a risk to put budget towards City midfielders and attackers.

That being said, if an FPL manager enjoys chasing differentials in a bid to climb rank, Phil Foden (£8.3m) and Bernardo Silva (£7.2m) are the highest scoring City midfielders and could offer fruitful rewards in exchange for decent prices.

After the visit of West Ham, Pep’s troops face an inviting run of games, facing Aston Villa, Watford, Wolves, Leeds, Newcastle, Leicester and Brentford before the new year.
