West Ham United 2021/22 Women's Super League Fixtures: Five to look out for
Olli Harder’s side finished the 2020/21 season strongly, playing a fast-paced, pressing style of football, and have made numerous strong acquisitions to bolster their squad as they look to build on that good run of form.
And while all fixtures are subject to change, that hasn't stopped us from already highlighting five of the standout prospective dates from the upcoming campaign...
Sunday 5 September 2021 - Brighton & Hove Albion (A)
A new season, a new start, and new optimism for West Ham United's Women's team, as they kick-off their 2021/22 campaign with a trip to Broadfield Stadium in Crawley, where Brighton & Hove Albion await on the opening day.
Hope Powell's side secured two extremely hard-fought 1-0 wins over the Hammers last season, but with Olli Harder's team possessing plenty of fresh faces this year, Hammers supporters will be looking for their new signings to give them the edge in such fixtures.
The game will, of course, be the Irons' first in front of fans for a while, which brings us to...
Sunday 12 September 2021 - Aston Villa (H)
The return of the Claret and Blue Army to a revamped Victoria Road arrives with the first home fixture of the season, against Aston Villa in mid-September.
Fittingly, the fixture falls on the exact anniversary of the last time West Ham's fans were present at a game - a defeat to Arsenal last season - and while the result didn't go our way that day, there's every chance it might this season as the squad will be buoyed on by the Women's team's famously vociferous support. Just wait for 'I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles'!
Sunday 21 November 2021 - Tottenham Hotspur (H)
It wouldn't be a West Ham fixtures highlights list without this entry - the home leg of the London derby against Tottenham Hotspur!
Last time around, it was Spurs who sneaked a narrow 1-0 victory at Victoria Road in what was manager Harder's first game in charge of the Club. Even that day, the Irons had enough chances to win the game, and with the amount the side has progressed since then, a derby against West Ham's London rivals is always a prospect to be relished.
Sunday 6 March 2022 - Chelsea (H)
To be the best, you have to beat the best - and there are few worldwide forces in Women's football quite like Emma Hayes' all-conquering back-to-back WSL champions.
Yet Harder's Hammers put in a good performance against such distinguished opposition in March and could consider themselves unfortunate not to have found the back of the net in an eventual 2-0 defeat. There'll be no better opposition for them to prove their quality against in the forthcoming campaign.
Sunday 24 April 2022 - Reading (A)
Undoubtedly the Hammers' finest performance of last season came at the Select Car Leasing Stadium - then known at the Madejski - as a superb counter-attacking showing sore West Ham tear apart Reading 5-0.
The Irons were 3-0 up inside eleven minutes, and all five goals arrived in the opening half, as Harder's team ran riot in Berkshire. The manager will be hoping for more of the same again next Spring.
