Angelo Ogbonna: It was so important to bounce back with a win

Angelo Ogbonna

West Ham United’s match-winner on Merseyside was delighted to help his team bounce back from their disappointment prior to the international break.

As well as providing a sturdy defensive performance to help the Hammers claim only their second clean sheet of the Premier League season so far, Angelo Ogbonna also popped up with the winning goal 16 minutes from time to help his team return to winning ways against Everton.

The Italian centre-back attacked a corner well at the near post with 16 minutes remaining, flicking on Jarrod Bowen’s set-piece and diverting the ball past Jordan Pickford and inside the far corner of the net.

Having suffered the frustration of a last-minute defeat to Brentford a fortnight prior, Ogbonna was pleased to play his part at both ends of the pitch in Sunday's crucial 1-0 win.

“It was so important today because we wanted to bounce back from the last game,” Ogbonna told Sky Sports.

“I think it was very, very important [to win]. We kept a clean sheet and got what we deserved today.

“It was a totally hard game, but I think the players in the middle of the park, like Tomas [Souček] and Dec [Rice], played fantastically. They helped us to keep a clean sheet.”

Asked if he would target further goals this season, the Italian smiled: “I wish, as long as I don’t concede!

“That is the most important thing but if I can help the team [score], I’m very glad.”

The Irons’ fourth win in their opening eight Premier League games – marking their first back-to-back victories at Goodison Park since 1930 – sees them return to sixth place in the standings.

And Ogbonna feels that, with the quality of overall performance his team provided on Sunday afternoon, that is the calibre of side which West Ham represent now.

“We want to challenge the teams at the top,” he confirmed.

“I think everything comes from the performance and today we can’t complain about our performance.

“Like I said, we won all the second balls in the middle of the park. We were unbelievable and that’s why we had our chance here.”
