Team News: David Moyes offers squad fitness update

David Moyes

David Moyes will monitor the fitness of his collective squad ahead of Sunday’s Premier League trip to Everton.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the West Ham United manager suspected that the October international window is likely to impact a number of sides with respect to players’ availability this weekend.

Eight senior West Ham players were called up by their respective countries for fixtures in the last fortnight.

“We’re probably like everybody else,” Moyes confirmed. “We've probably got one or two injuries, one or two people coming back from international duty that we're having to look after.

“It looks like this international break's taken its toll on a lot of people, and we’re no different.

"If I did have [any confirmed players missing], I probably wouldn't tell you anyway! We might have some people who are not available.”

The Hammers will kick off a busy period of seven matches in 22 days with Sunday’s trip to Goodison Park, during which time they will face matches in the Premier League, the UEFA Europa League and the Carabao Cup.

Having undergone a similar period prior to the international window, when Moyes’ squad played seven times in 23 days across three competitions in five different cities, the manager discussed the selection considerations such a run of games incurs.

“I’ve put quite a lot of planning in,” Moyes confirmed.

“I’ve tried to train at a good level in the last week or two, because we know our training times and minutes will be limited in the next month or so.

“I’m also aware that I have to make sure I use the squad the best I can. I think we’ve tried to do that in the games. Whether that be in the Carabao Cup or the European games, I think we’ve done it as well as we can.

“You only need to start to get one or two injuries and it can start to affect your numbers, so from that point of view, you’ve got to be really mindful.

“It’s what we wanted. We knew there would always be times when it gets busy, so I hope that we’ll try and manage it as well as we can and continue to play as well as we’ve been doing.”
