On This Day: Frank McAvennie at the double as West Ham win at Manchester United

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, in association with RoadX Tyres...

Frank McAvennie scored two goals as West Ham United scored a thrilling 3-2 First Division win at Manchester United on this day in 1986!

Fresh from appearing for his country at the FIFA World Cup finals in Mexico, the Scotland striker prodded the Hammers in front with an instinctive left-foot finish.

Alan Devonshire made it 2-0 to the visitors when he headed the ball into his own path before lobbing goalkeeper Chris Turner.

Frank Stapleton pulled one back for Ron Atkinson's side five minutes before half-time before Peter Davenport equalised a minute after the break, volleying home from inside the six-yard box.

But John Lyall's side were not to be denied, and McAvennie secured a memorable win when he headed Mark Ward's lofted cross over Turner and into the net, sending the Claret and Blue Army gathered behind the goal wild.
