On this day: Sheringham gets off the mark in style

The Hammers continued their unbeaten start to the 2004/05 campaign on this date in the calendar with a 1-0 victory over Reading in their first home outing.

Having drawn 0-0 at Leicester on the opening day, Alan Pardew's Hammers welcomed the Royals to the Boleyn Ground for a midweek fixture.

West Ham were recovering from the blow of defeat in the play-off final just over two months previously, but remained solid at the back for a second game running.

That provided the platform for victory as Teddy Sheringham popped up with an 81st minute winner to keep the points in east London - the veteran striker's first goal in Claret & Blue.

The Hammers would go on to secure a play-off spot for a second season in succession, this time emerging successful as they defeated Preston North End in Cardiff.
