Lanzini: I want to play every game for West Ham this season

Manuel Lanzini

Perhaps more than any other West Ham United player, Manuel Lanzini is desperate to complete a full preseason.

The Hammers’ Argentina midfielder has missed the start of each of the last three seasons through injury, preventing him from attaining the base level of fitness vital to players at the highest level of the game, and putting him at higher risk of picking up further problems on his return.

For that reason, Lanzini is delighted with the work he has put in so far, first in Switzerland and latterly in China, where West Ham are competing in the Premier League Asia Trophy.

“Preseason has been very good so far,” he confirmed. “For me personally, I really need this hard work and the two weeks we have had so far have been amazing. We need to keep going like this as it’s good for us.

“The preseason is very important for every player and for me it is the most important because if you do these five or six weeks of work, then you have a basis for the whole year and you just need to keep your work going.

“Preseason is the most important time, for me. I want to play all the games, I want to stay in the team and I am working for this and to not have more injuries, and that’s it.”

Continuing in a positive theme, Lanzini also believes the atmosphere in the West Ham squad is as good as it has been at any time in his four-year career in Claret and Blue.

The 25-year-old is part of a fully-fit and confident group who arrived in China on Sunday.

There, they will take on Manchester City in Nanjing on Wednesday evening and either Newcastle United or Wolverhampton Wanderers in Shanghai on Saturday, with the overall aim of lifting a welcome piece of silverware.

Whatever happens in the Far East, the midfielder says optimism is flowing through Manuel Pellegrini’s men as the 2019/20 campaign approaches.

“We are all together,” the No10 observed. “Last year, I missed preseason, Carlos [Sanchez], Jack [Wilshere] and Andriy [Yarmolenko] missed most of the season, Chicha had a long time out and other players missed time through injuries, but this time everyone is here and the atmosphere is good, which is great for us.

“I like this experience at the Asia Trophy. China is a good place to visit. I have never been here before, so it is interesting for me.

“For West Ham, it is important for the Club to show itself. We have important games here to show where we are at and they will help us to set a standard for the Premier League season.”
