West Ham United U21s will travel to Newport County, Exeter City and Cheltenham Town in the EFL Trophy this season.

The Hammers were drawn in Group E in the regionalised South half of the draw that took place on talkSPORT on Friday lunchtime.

West Ham will travel to Wales to play Newport County, who were defeated in the League Two play-off final last year having finished seventh. They were knocked out of the EFL Trophy by fellow Group E members Cheltenham Town.

The Hammers will also travel to Devon to face Exeter City, who narrowly missed out on the League Two play-offs, finishing ninth in their division. They topped their group in the EFL Trophy last season but were subsequently beaten by Peterborough in the second round.

West Ham are also due to travel to Gloucestershire to play Cheltenham Town who finished 16th in League Two last year. The Robins topped their group in the EFL Trophy in 2018/19, making it to the third round where they were knocked out by Oxford United.

This will be West Ham’s fourth season taking part in the competition that invites Category One academies to face League One and League Two opposition.

The competition helps give the young Irons valuable experience against Football League opposition, which is crucial for their development.

The final will be played at Wembley in March, where last season 85,000 fans attended Portsmouth's penalty shoot-out victory against Sunderland.

Confirmation of the dates and times of the fixtures against all three clubs will follow in due course.
