Young Hammers get down to work in Slovakia
West Ham United’s Academy kicked-off their summer pre-season camp with a tough session at their Košice base on Monday afternoon.
The Hammers arrived in the Slovakian city midway through the morning and settled in before heading to their first training day.
Terry Westley’s men are based at FC Košice’s Lokomotiva Stadium for their six-day stay, a ground which has in the past hosted a number of famous European nights including the visits of Manchester United and AS Roma.
Their Monday session, taken by Westley, assistant Academy manager Liam Manning and former Hammer of the Year and current U18s boss Steve Potts, included a plenty of ball work and even a thunderstorm and almighty downpour failed to prevent the youngsters putting in the hard yards.
The U23 squad, which is a youthful group given a number of the regular 23s are continuing to train with Manuel Pellegrini’s first team this summer, have their first of two fixtures on Tuesday.
They take on MFK Zemplín Michalovce at the Lokomotiva, with a decent chunk of local support expected to turn out for the clash.
A Fortuna Liga side who finished eighth in Slovakia’s top division last season, Michalovce should provide West Ham with a tough match a week prior to the start of the league season locally.
The east Londoners will contest their 5pm (local time) clash before training for a further three days in preparation for a fixture against the recently-reformed FC VSS Košice on Saturday.
