Arsenal betting preview with Betway

After the disappointing Europa League exit in midweek West Ham United start the Barclays Premier League season with a tough trip to the Emirates on Sunday afternoon. A happy hunting ground at the end of the 2006/07 season when registering a thoroughly deserved 1-0 victory against the odds. Recent trips to take on Arsene Wenger’s side haven’t been quite so fruitful. The last three seasons have seen an aggregate scoreline of 11-2 to the Gunners and no points for the Hammers.
With Arsenal well backed for the Premier League title (4/1 third favourites with Betway) their odds for this game have been shortened to 2/7. The draw, last achieved with a 0-0 back in 2008/09, is offered at 9/2 and the away win we’re all hoping for priced at 8/1. There’s a glimmer of hope for Slaven Bilic and his side with the news that Gunners playmaker Alexis Sanchez will miss the game. That will seriously impact on the goal threat of the home team. Using the fitness gained from those Europa League matches as a boost this derby might not be the foregone conclusion the odds suggest.
With Sanchez out Olivier Giroud is a clear favourite to get the first goal of the game at 3/1. The first Hammers player to feature on that ‘First Goalscorer’ market is Diafra Sakho at 11/1, he’s closely followed by Mauro Zarate at 14/1. A market exclusively focused on West Ham’s first scorer in the match has Sakho at 9/2, Zarate at 11/2 and Mark Noble at 9/1. It’s a 9/5 chance that the Hammers fail to score, but the good news is that we make it odds-on that they will find the net at least once!
Arsenal’s opening day record has been hit and miss in the last few years and two seasons ago Aston Villa came from a goal behind to shock the Emirates crowd into silence with a 3-1 away win. Crystal Palace also ran them close last season, with Aaron Ramsey’s 90th minute winner eventually sparing the home sides blushes. Here’s hoping West Ham are quick out of the blocks and register a big priced win. The most likely ‘Correct Score’ for a West Ham victory is a repeat of that 2007 0-1 scoreline at 16/1.
