Born: 16 September 1953, Santiago, Chile
West Ham United Manager: 2018-2019
Manuel Pellegrini was appointed West Ham United manager in May 2018.
Born in Chile to Italian parents, Pellegrini spent his eight-year playing career as a centre-back with Universidad de Chile in his home city of Santiago, and was capped once by his country in 1986.
He moved into management with the same club in 1988, starting a long managerial career that has seen him take jobs in Chile, Argentina, Ecuador, Spain, England and China.
Pellegrini won trophies with Universidad Católica, LDU Quito, San Lorenzo, River Plate and Villarreal before leading Málaga into the UEFA Champions League.
In 2013, he joined Manchester City, where he enjoyed the fifth highest win percentage in Premier League history during his three years in charge.
In his debut campaign at the Etihad Stadium in 2013/14, Pellegrini led City to Premier League glory, becoming the first coach from outside of Europe to win the title, and the League Cup. City finished that campaign having scored 151 goals in all competitions – still an English record. Pellegrini won another League Cup in his final season in Manchester, before making way for Pep Guardiola in the summer of 2016.
Pellegrini then took charge of Chinese Super League club Hebei China Fortune for two seasons before heading to West Ham in May 2018.
After a slow start, his Hammers recovered to finish tenth in the Premier League with 52 points in 2018/19. Pellegrini’s Irons started the 2019/20 season strongly, but a run of defeats in late 2019 saw him depart just after Christmas after 18 months in charge.
