Bobby Zamora in 2004

On This Day: Zamora strike downs Cardiff

Bobby Zamora scored the winner as West Ham United defeated Cardiff City by a single goal in the First Division on 28 February 2004.

The striker broke the deadlock with just 17 minutes to play at the Boleyn Ground, latching onto David Connolly's pass and finishing past future West Ham goalkeeper coach Martyn Margetson to earn a vital three points for Alan Pardew's promotion-chasing Hammers.

It was Zamora's second goal on just his third appearance for the Irons, the No25 having moved to east London from local rivals Tottenham Hotspur the previous month in a part-exchange deal that saw Jermain Defoe move in the opposite direction.

The Barking-born forward would go on to score three more times as Pardew's Hammers reached the Play-Off final, where they were edged out by Crystal Palace at the Millennium Stadium.
