2015 participants inspire new Hammers Trekkers

The deadline for application for teenagers to retrace the journey of the Thames Ironworks-built gunship Yavari to South America is fast approaching.

Youngsters can apply to embark on the once-in-a-lifetime trek to Peru, where they will have the opportunity to build self-confidence, develop leadership skills and promote teamwork, while maintaining the historic link between West Ham United and the Yavari’s Lake Titicaca home.

Taking place in 2018, successful applicants aged 12-18 at the time of the trek – the second such excursion hosted by the Foundation – can expect a life-changing experience.

Previously, in 2015, 16 Yavari Trekkers embarked on the challenge, which is run in partnership with Wilderness Expertise.

Prior to departure, the group visited the Hammers’ training ground, where they joined first-team players in putting local primary school pupils through a series of football sessions by way of preparation.

Speaking to the 2015 Yavari Trekkers at the historic site of Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company in Trinity Buoy Wharf, Bow Creek, Joint-Chairman David Gold told them: “One of the most powerful things you will experience in your life is confidence. Doing what you’re doing now is how you gain confidence. When you come back you will have a story to tell that nobody else will have, bar those people all those years ago who took the ship to Peru.

“I want you to take this message with you on your trip. What you’re doing is fantastic but what you are also building within yourself is confidence and that’s the first step on the ladder to becoming a great leader.”

Timothy Lukwago, a former Yavari Trekker who has used the skills gained to obtain full-time employment with the West Ham United Foundation, endorsed the initiative and encouraged youngsters to apply for the 2018 edition.

He said: “This really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I would encourage any young people with an interest in West Ham United to come along and find out some more about the expedition.”
