Local schools qualify for Lycamobile Cup

Teams from schools in Hackney, Newham and Waltham Forest turned out in force on Wednesday for the second qualifier for the 2016/17 Lycamobile Cup at Chobham Academy, Stratford.

144 pupils took part in the tournament, with ten under-12 teams and eight under-14 teams competing. The winning teams from each age group were presented with medals and a trophy, as well as earning the opportunity to progress to the finals in May 2017, alongside the runners up from each group.

Congratulations to U12s Winners: St Mary Magdalene Academy, U12s Runners-up: Eastlea Community School, U14s Winners: Highams Park School and U14s Runners-up: Heathcote School.

The tournament was the second of its kind, with the first taking place at the West Ham United Foundation in Beckton, where Andy Carroll, Raphael Spiegel and Jonathan Calleri helped get the competition underway.

2017 will see a further two qualifying tournaments at Barking Abbey Sports Ground and Caterham High School, giving a further 30+ schools the opportunity to reach the finals in May, which were last year held at the Boleyn Ground.

The schools who competed in Wednesday’s qualifying tournament were: Eastlea Community School; Langdon Academy; Skinners academy; Highams Park school; St Pauls Way Trust; Willowfield School; Oasis Academy; Lammas School; St Mary Magdalene Academy; Chobham Academy
