Sunderland 3-2 West Ham United
West Ham were beaten 3-2 by Sunderland in their first-ever U18 Premier League Cup match at the Academy of Light.
Goals from Korrey Henry and substitute Louie Watson could not prevent the Hammers' north east opponents coming out on top in the Group D tie, though the visitors pushed hard in the final 15 minutes for an equaliser that never came.
It took 40 minutes for Sunderland to break the deadlock, but they did so when Scottish striker Lee Connelly rose highest in the box to nod the hosts in front.
In the second half, Black Cats keeper Patterson failed to hold Henry's rasping effort and the Hammers were level, however soon after, Connelly grabbed his second to frustrate West Ham.
Three minutes later, the forward had his hat-trick, rounding Rihards Matrevics in the West Ham goal to give Sunderland a two-goal advantage.
Sub Watson came on to set up a grand-stand finish, but Sunderland held on to take the points. West Ham will hope for better when they take on Liverpool and Middlesbrough in their remaining two Group D fixtures.
