The Hammers overcame La Gantoise 2-1 on aggregate in the European Cup Winners' Cup three days before they dispatched Villa at the Boleyn Ground.

Martin Peters, Johnny Byrne and Ronnie Boyce scored the goals to ensure a comfortable afternoon for the home side.

The Hammers went onto finish ninth this season with Villa ending up in 16th position.
