Anniversary

Name: Julian Dicks
Born: Bristol, 8 August 1968
Clubs: Birmingham City, West Ham United, Liverpool, West Ham United, Canvey Island

Julian Dicks, who spent two spells with the Hammers in the 1980s and 1990s, is today celebrating his 47th birthday.

He first arrived at the Boleyn Ground in 1988 from first club Birmingham City, and remained at the Club for five years, playing 158 league games as the Hammers won promotion back to the top flight.

He was named captain at just 23 years of age, but joined Liverpool in 1993 in a swap deal that involved David Burrows and Mike Marsh heading in the opposite direction.

However, Dicks was only at Anfield for a year and he soon rejoined West Ham, with his second spell lasting another five years and 103 league games.

Dicks also notched 50 league goals for the Hammers, with his fierce left foot putting him on regular penalty and free kick duties.

A 14-year professional career ultimately came to an end in 1999, with Dicks troubled by a knee injury, and after a brief spell playing for non-league Canvey Island, he managed Wivenhoe Town and Grays Athletic.

Now back at the Boleyn Ground, he is currently first team coach having been the Hammers' Ladies manager for two years previously.
