Dylan Tombides was a late substitute in Australia U22's defeat to Saudi Arabia in the quarter-finals of the AFC U22 Championships on Monday.

The tournament serves as preparation for Australia's Olympic qualifying campaign, and victories over Iran and Kuwait in the group stage set up their quarter-final tie.

They were made to rue a slow start to the second period, as Saudi Arabia's Abdulfattah Asiri and Abduallah Khalid Alammar netted to give their side the edge.

Andrew Hoole's 73rd minute dismissal further hindered the Australian effort, although Petros Skapetis' penalty four minutes later gave them hope.

Tombides entered the fray in the closing stages and Australia pushed hard for a leveller, but ultimately came up just short.
