The Northern Ireland international first moved to east London in 1991 from Luton Town after spending the early part of his career in the lower leagues. In his first stint at the Boleyn Ground he made 14 appearances before leaving to join Southampton later in 1991. Dowie returned in 1995 from Crystal Palace and stayed for three years, making 83 appearances before leaving to join Queens Park Rangers in 1998.

FA Cup third round
9 January 1965

West Ham welcomed Birmingham City to the Boleyn Ground in 1965 as the sides played out an exciting FA Cup third round tie.

A Geoff Hurst double and goals for Johnny Byrne and John Sissons saw the home side to victory in a six-goal thriller in front of over 31,000 fans.

The Hammers would find their cup run short-lived however as Chelsea proved too strong in the fourth round, beating West Ham by a single goal.
