West Ham extended their seven match unbeaten run with a narrow win over the Magpies at St James Park on this day 28 years ago.

Goals from Frank McAvennie and Tony Cottee moved the Hammers up to eleventh place in the league, a position they would never fall below for the rest of the season.

John Lyall's side kept climbing the league table, eventually finishing in third place only four point off champions Liverpool - the Hammers' best ever league finish.
