West Ham United 4-3 Portsmouth
npower Championship
10 September 2011

A first home win in six months made sure West Ham continued their positive start following relegation to the Championship.

Sam Allardyce's team recovered from an early Luke Varney goal with strikes of their own from Matt Taylor and Henri Lansbury before David Norris equalised.

Carlton Cole and a Mark Noble penalty made it 4-2 before ten-man Pompey grabbed a last minute consolation when Greg Halford despatched his penalty.

It was a vital home win for the Hammers who recovered from the disappointment of missing out on automatic promotion to seal a return to the top flight via the play-offs later that season.
