Sheffield Wednesday 0-1 West Ham United
Premier League
15 August 1998

West Ham United made the journey to Yorkshire to begin their 1998/99 campaign with an away fixture at Sheffield Wednesday.

With Wednesday having finished 13th in the previous season, and the Hammers eighth, hopes were high that they could make a successful start to the season.

Those hopes were justified as a solid performance allowed them to get off to the perfect start.

Ian Wright scored the only goal of the game with just six minutes remaining to leave the Hammers third in the standings after one game.

They followed that with a 0-0 draw against Manchester United at the Boleyn Ground and went on to enjoy a successful season, finishing fifth in the Premier League.
