Introduction

• West Ham United play the first match of their three-game tour of Germany when they take on 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday.

• The Hammers are in Germany for an eleven-day tour as they continue to prepare for the start of the new Barclays Premier League campaign and Mainz are set to provide their toughest summer test to date.

• West Ham come into this fixture boasting a perfect pre-season record, having defeated Cork City (6-2), Boreham Wood (3-0), AFC Bournemouth (2-0) and Colchester United (2-1).

• Mainz's Bundesliga campaign begins a week earlier than the Hammers' with a home match against VfB Stuttgart on Sunday 11 August first up, and they defeated Dutch side Groningen 4-0 in their most recent pre-season match on Thursday.

• The Hammers have brought an almost fully-fit squad out to Germany for their pre-season tour. Only George McCartney (knee) and Andy Carroll (heel) are set to miss Saturday's game against Mainz.


Background

• West Ham United embarked upon a similar tour of Germany last year, defeating Rot-Weiss Erfurt, drawing with Energie Cottbus and losing out when they faced Dynamo Dresden.

• 1. FSV Mainz 05 finished 13th in the Bundesliga last term, having collected 42 points from their 34.games. They also reached the quarter-finals of the German Cup.

• Founded in 1905, they mostly played as a second division side after the professional Bundesliga came into being in 1963. Under Jurgen Klopp, they gained promotion to the top flight in 2003/04 and have only spent two years outside since.
