On this day - 6 July

Wallabies winger Stan Lazaridis collected his sixth international cap on 6 July 1997, as Australia progressed to an intercontinental play-off in their bid to qualify for the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

Having won the first leg against New Zealand 3-0 in Auckland, Sydney played host to the return fixture, where goals in either half courtesy of Ned Zelic and Graham Arnold set up a play-off showdown with Iran.

It would end, however, in disappointment for Lazaridis and co, as Australia crashed out on away goals, having drawn the two-legged tie 3-3.

The tricky left-sided midfielder was, at this stage, two seasons into a four-year stint at the Boleyn Ground, during which he would make 87 appearances, scoring three times.

Two years later to the day, eccentric defender Javier Margas became the first West Ham United player to represent Chile.

In the midst of a Copa America campaign in Paraguay, Chile took on eventual winners Brazil, losing out to a solitary Ronaldo strike.

In actual fact, the game was abandoned after 85 minutes due to the onset of fog, though the result was subsequently allowed to stand.

Chile ended the tournament in fourth, losing 2-1 to Mexico in a third-place play off. Margas, meanwhile, would go on to enjoy his best season in claret and blue, making a total of 19 starts in the 1999/00 campaign.
