West Ham United
2-2 Aston Villa
11 May 2008
Premier League

West Ham United and Aston Villa played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Boleyn Ground in this season finale five years ago. With it being Olof Mellberg's last game for the visitors, the Swede famously bought a Villa shirt for each and every one of the 3200 travelling fans.

Ironically, it was a former Villan who got the ball rolling for Alan Curbishley's men, as set-piece specialist Nolberto Solano fired home a free-kick after just eight minutes. But after Ashley Young had squared matters six minutes thereafter, Gareth Barry completed the turnaround just before the hour.

Fortunately, with just two minutes left on the clock, Dean Ashton took matters into his own hands, drilling home brilliantly from the edge of the box. It was Ashton's third goal in as many outings, having memorably dispatched an overhead kick at Old Trafford the previous week.

As it turned out, the point was enough to see the Hammers finish the campaign in tenth spot, three points clear of Tottenham Hotspur in eleventh.
