Wigan Athletic 1-1 West Ham United
9 May 2004
West Ham United travelled north to Wigan on this day nine years ago knowing any result better than a four-goal defeat would secure a Play-Off berth in Division One.
The Hammers were vying for an immediate return to the top flight, while Wigan were also in the hunt for the Play-Offs, but this result would ultimately end their dreams.
Wigan did give themselves hope by moving into the lead through Neil Roberts, who finished after Alan Mahon and Nathan Ellington combined to set up the chance.
But West Ham extinguished that glimmer with a late goal from Brian Deane. They would go on to defeat Ipswich Town in the Play-Off semi-final, but Crystal Palace won promotion by triumphing 1-0 in the final.
