Classic match

West Ham United 3-0 Sunderland
20 April 2002
Premier League

Glenn Roeder's Hammers consigned Sunderland to a fifth successive away defeat, as a 3-0 win on this day edged Peter Reid's men ever closer to the Premier League's drop zone.

In West Ham's penultimate home fixture of the campaign, Trevor Sinclair volleyed the hosts into a 28th-minute lead, flicking it over George McCartney, of all people, before firing low into the corner past Thomas Sorensen.

It remained that way until seven minutes after the interval, when Sinclair squared for Northern Ireland international Steve Lomas to side-foot home.

And it was left to Jermain Defoe to round off a thoroughly satisfying afternoon for the men in claret and blue, as he poached a third with 77 minutes on the clock.

Though the Mackems would draw each of their two remaining fixtures, it proved plenty to preserve their top-flight status, as they finished 17th, four clear of the drop zone.

Glenn Roeder's Hammers, meanwhile, ended the campaign in seventh, albeit a colossal eleven points behind sixth-placed Chelsea.
