West Ham United players Winston Reid, Guy Demel, Mohamed Diame and Jordan Spence crossed swords with professional sailors from Team Alpari FX on Thursday for a game-changing sports challenge in the City of London.

Alpari, who recently were announced as the club's principal sponsor from the start of the 2013/14 season, were celebrating expanding their sponsorship portfolio with Team Alpari FX, a professional sailing team led by former world champion skipper Adam Minoprio.

The 'Game Changers' stunt saw the Hammers stars meet Team Alpari FX on the rooftop of the Alpari UK headquarters. The sailors and footballers raced through the City skyscraper and hit a remarkable trick shot at the finish line as skipper Minoprio and David Swete challenged the footballers to kick a ball through a life ring from a distance of 25 yards.

David Hodge, Chief Marketing Officer, Alpari (UK) Limited, commented: "We are keen to support teams with game-changing potential and we believe Team Alpari FX and West Ham United have the necessary determination to succeed in shaping their sports. This determination is shared by Alpari as we reshape the forex industry by putting clients at the heart of everything we do.

"Both teams attract a large international audience and this will help Alpari reach out to supporters who can identify with the values that the teams share with us and our traders."

Reid said: "This truly was a game-changing trick shot! Being part of a sports challenge off the pitch and in a City skyscraper is about challenging the norm and that is what Alpari is about."

Demel added: "Our sponsors Alpari got us together with the sailors and some teammates today. It's a good thing to do and I really enjoyed it.

"It was really good to see what the sailors get up to and you can see by their bodies that they're fit and built up. So sailing's clearly not as easy as we thought!"

Adam Minoprio, skipper, Team Alpari FX, said: "We're delighted to team up with Alpari and join the other high-profile teams Alpari sponsors such as West Ham United. I won't forget today's trick shot in a hurry!"

According to fellow Team Alpari FX sailor and another New Zealander Nick Blackman, the two disciplines of football and sailing are not as different as you may think.

He explained: "We've been talking with the guys and we obviously spend a lot of time on the road. They spend time travelling to different venues each week and we're off to regattas. We have similarities in that respect, and in the team environment too - we work together as a team, very similar to these guys.

"Winston is a big player for New Zealand, everyone knows about him over there, so it's cool for us to have this involvement with Alpari moving forward. It's great for us as a Kiwi team to get to meet Winston, hang out with him and talk about football.

"The Premier League is followed a lot in New Zealand and the supporters over there often don't have strong allegiances with a team so the Winston link will bring a lot of Kiwis closer to West Ham."

Global forex broker Alpari will be the principal sponsor of both West Ham United from the start of the 2013/2014 season and Team Alpari FX, a professional sailing team led by former world champion skipper Adam Minoprio (NZL), from April. Watch both teams take part in a trick shot stunt here.
