West Ham United 5-0 Sheffield United
21 March 1990
Little more than a month after Lou Macari's departure, Billy Bonds' Hammers smashed five without reply past fellow promotion chasers Sheffield United at the Boleyn Ground.
Well-travelled frontman Jimmy Quinn was the architect in chief, as he bagged a hat-trick, his only triple in claret and blue. Martin Allen (pictured) and Trevor Morley were the other men to get on the scoresheet, with the latter netting for a fourth start in succession.
It was the Hammers' second 5-0 triumph of the campaign, having earlier seen off Sunderland by the same margin. What's more, the comprehensive victory completed an unlikely double over the high-flying Blades, after West Ham had won the reverse fixture 2-0 back in October.
Ironically, it was Sheffield United who would go on to secure promotion, as they finished second to Leeds United on goal difference. The Hammers meanwhile would have to settle for seventh, as they ended the season a place and two points outside of the play-off picture.
