West Ham United 3-4 Tottenham Hotspur
Premier League
4 March 2007

Some six years ago West Ham United kick-started their now famous 'Great Escape' in the most extraordinary of circumstances, as they surrendered a two-goal lead in a 4-3 home defeat by Tottenham Hotspur.

Mark Noble got the ball rolling with his first league goal for the club, before Carlos Tevez, too, opened his Hammers account, lashing a free-kick past Paul Robinson and off the underside of the bar. It proved a fragile advantage, however, as Jermain Defoe converted from the penalty spot and then Teemu Tainio volleyed home to square things up in the 63rd minute.

Astonishingly, Bobby Zamora leapt off the bench to head the hosts back in front with just five minutes left, but there was to be no happy ending for Alan Curbishley's men. Dimitar Berbatov clipped a delicious free-kick into the top corner, while a counter-attack, some four minutes into stoppage time saw Paul Stalteri slide home, after Robert Green had parried Defoe's drive.

Defeat left West Ham bottom of the Premier League and ten points adrift of safety, with only nine games to play. The Hammers would subsequently embark on a scarcely believable run of seven wins out of nine to claw their way out of trouble. They finished the campaign in 15th place with 41 points.
