Classic Match

21 February 1970
Sunderland 0-1 West Ham United
League Division One

A crowd of 16,900 turned out at Roker Park hoping to watch their relegation-threatened side give their hopes of avoiding the drop a boost.

But they were left disappointed by the Hammers, who ensured they would make the long journey home a happy one with a 1-0 victory.

The Hammers didn't have too much to celebrate on their travels that season, with only four away wins to show for their efforts.

This two-point haul was secured courtesy of a Geoff Hurst goal, while a backline marshalled expertly by Bobby Moore helped record a vital clean sheet.

The victory left West Ham 17th in the Division One table - a position they would occupy at the end of the campaign, with 36 points from 42 starts, 10 more than Sunderland who would suffer relegation as the second-bottom finishers.
